Clara was born in New Jersey, where her parents had landed after fleeing[4] the Turks in Armenia, and they moved to the Mission District of San Francisco when she was a child.  She had a secret that she rarely mentioned to anyone: She had been married before, but her husband had been killed in the war.  So when she met Paul Jobs on that first date, she was primed to[5] start a new life.

Like many who lived through the war, they had experienced enough excitement that, when it was over, they desired simply to settle down, raise a family, and lead a less eventful life.  They had little money, so they moved to Wisconsin and lived with Paul’s parents for a few years, then headed for Indiana, where he got a job as a machinist for International Harvester.  His passion was tinkering[6] with old cars, and he made money in his spare time buying, restoring, and selling them.  Eventually he quit his day job[7] to become a full-time used car salesman.

Clara, however, loved San Francisco, and in 1952 she convinced her husband to move back there.  They got an apartment in the Sunset District facing the Pacific, just south of Golden Gate Park, and he took a job working for a finance company as a “repo man[8],” picking the locks[9] of cars whose owners hadn’t paid their loans and repossessing[10] them.  He also bought, repaired, and sold some of the cars, making a decent[11] enough living in the process.

There was, however, something missing in their lives.  They wanted children, but Clara had suffered an ectopic pregnancy[12], in which the fertilized egg[13] was implanted[14] in a fallopian tube[15] rather than the uterus, and she had been unable to have any.  So by 1955, after nine years of marriage, they were looking to adopt a child.

그러나 그들의 삶에서는 잃어버린 무엇인가가 있었다. 그들은 아이를 원했지만 Clara가 수정란(fertilized egg)이 자궁(uterus)이 아니라 나팔관(fallopian tube)에 착상되는 ‘자궁외 임신(ectopic pregnancy)’으로 어려움을 겪고 있었기에, 그녀는 어떠한 아이도 가질 수가 없었다.

Like Paul Jobs, Joanne Schieble was from a rural Wisconsin family of German heritage.  Her father, Arthur Schieble, had immigrated to the outskirts[3] of Green Bay, where he and his wife owned a mink farm and dabbled[4] successfully in various other businesses, including real estate and photoengraving[5].  He was very strict, especially regarding his daughter’s relationships[6], and he had strongly disapproved of her first love, an artist who was not a Catholic.  Thus it was no surprise that he threatened to cut[7] Joanne off completely when, as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, she fell in love with Abdulfattah “John” Jandali, a Muslim teaching assistant from Syria.

Paul Jobs 처럼, Joanne Schieble은 독일인 거주지의 시골 Wisconsin 가정 출신이었다. 그녀의 아버지 Arthur Shieble은 Green Bay 의 외곽으로 이주하였는데, 그곳에서 그와 그녀의 아내는 밍크 농장을 소유하였으며 부동산과 사진 제판(photoengraving)과 같은 여러 가지 사업을 취미삼아 성공적으로 하고 있었다. 그는 매우 엄격하였는데, 특히 그녀의 딸의 연인관계에 관하여 그러했고, 그리고 그는 그녀의 첫번째 애인을 강하게 부정하였는데, 그 애인은 예술가였으며, 카톨릭 교도가 아니었다. 그리하여 그가 그때 Joanne을 완전히 의절하겠다고 위협한 것은 놀라운 일도 아니었다. Wisconsin 대학교의 대원생 시절, 그녀가 Abdufattah John Jandali와 사랑에 빠졌을 때 말이다. 그는 Syria 출신 Muslim 조교였다.
